Irvine Station: Metrolink's Orange County Line and the Pacific Surfliner
Irvine Station, one of the busiest stops in the Metrolink system, connects the city to Los Angeles, San Diego and the rest of the coastal rail corridor.

Irvine Station sits in the Spectrum area off Barranca Parkway, and for many residents it is the most civilized way to leave town. From its platforms, Metrolink's Orange County Line runs north toward Los Angeles and south toward Oceanside, while Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner links Irvine to San Diego, Los Angeles and points north along one of the most scenic rail corridors in the country.
The station itself is built for volume, with parking structures, drop-off areas and bus connections that serve commuters heading to downtown Los Angeles and other job centers as well as leisure travelers bound for the beach cities and San Diego. On weekday mornings the rhythm is commuter-steady; on weekends, the Surfliner draws families, cyclists with bikes in hand and visitors who prefer the coast by rail to the freeway by car.
Using the station well takes a little planning. Check which service you need, since Metrolink and Amtrak use different tickets and fare systems even though they share tracks and platforms. Arrive with time to park and cross to the correct platform, and review return schedules before you go, because evening frequencies are thinner than drivers expect from a freeway city.
Rail from Irvine rewards the trips it suits best: a downtown Los Angeles workday without parking, a San Diego weekend without Interstate 5, a game or concert with a relaxed ride home. As Orange County continues to grow around its stations, Irvine's platform remains what it has long been, a front door to the whole coastal corridor hiding in plain sight beside the freeway.
