The Great Park: What's Built, What's Next at Irvine's Biggest Open Space
On the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the Great Park already offers a balloon ride, sports fields and wide lawns, with more phases still taking shape.

The Orange County Great Park occupies land that once served as Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, and its scale still reflects that history. Runways gave way to sports fields, lawns and pathways, but the site remains vast enough that each visit can feel like a different park depending on which corner you enter.
The most familiar feature is the Great Park Balloon, a tethered orange balloon that rises above the grounds and echoes the spherical icon longtime residents associate with the site. Nearby, the sports complex hosts soccer and other field sports on a cluster of pitches that stay busy with youth leagues, adult games and tournaments, while trails and open turf leave room for the unprogrammed side of park life: picnics, kites and long walks.
What makes the Great Park a continuing story is that it is still being built out in phases. Plans for the site have long included cultural, recreational and natural areas beyond the sports and lawn spaces already open, and construction timelines have stretched over many years. For residents, the useful question is practical: what is open now, where do you park, and which areas are closed for work when you arrive.
November is one of the kindest months to explore it. Summer heat has eased, the late light flatters the open landscape, and weekend schedules fill the fields without the worst of the midday glare. Start with the balloon area for orientation, walk a loop rather than trying to cover the whole property, and check the city's park information before you go for current hours and any phase work that may reroute paths.
