Woodbridge and the Village Idea: How Irvine Was Master-Planned

Woodbridge, built around twin lakes in the 1970s, is the clearest early example of Irvine's village concept: homes, schools, parks and shops arranged as a complete neighborhood.

Woodbridge and the Village Idea: How Irvine Was Master-Planned (Irvine Village News)

To understand Irvine, start in Woodbridge. Developed beginning in the 1970s around two man-made lakes, the village was designed as a self-contained community, with homes arranged around schools, parks, pools and a local shopping center, and with paths that let residents move through the neighborhood away from the busiest streets.

That village idea became the template for the whole city. Rather than growing outward in an unplanned sprawl, Irvine was laid out as a series of distinct villages, each with its own name, housing mix and commercial center, connected by wide arterial roads and separated by open space and landscaping. The result is a city that many newcomers first experience as a collection of neighborhoods rather than a single traditional downtown.

Woodbridge shows both the strengths and the trade-offs of the model. The lakes, bridges and tree-lined paths give it a settled, almost resort-like calm, and daily needs are close at hand. At the same time, the design is unmistakably automobile-era: distances between villages can be long on foot, and the wide roads that keep traffic moving can make crossings feel exposed for walkers and cyclists.

Walking Woodbridge today is a good way to read the city's history in one afternoon. Circle a lake, notice how cul-de-sacs feed into greenbelts, and see how later villages borrowed the pattern while updating the architecture. Irvine has grown far beyond its first villages, but the original idea still shapes how residents describe where they live: not just in Irvine, but in a village within it.
