Before winter rains arrive, Irvine households near foothills and canyons can clear drains, check roofs and gutters, and plan for slower travel on canyon roads.

Rainy-Season Prep in the Foothill Villages: Drains, Sandbags, Canyon Roads (Irvine Village News)

Irvine's rainy season does not follow a precise calendar, but November is the sensible month to prepare. Most of the city's annual rain falls in the cooler months, often in a handful of stronger storms, and a dry autumn can leave drains, gutters and hillsides full of the leaves and debris that cause the first storm's problems.

Start at home with the unglamorous basics. Clear gutters and downspouts, check that water drains away from the foundation, and inspect the roof for loose tiles or flashing issues before they become leaks. In the yard, secure loose items, trim weak branches where you can do so safely, and make sure patio and balcony drains are open. A few hours in dry weather is far easier than emergency work in a downpour.

For homes near foothills, slopes or canyon edges in villages such as Portola Springs, Orchard Hills and Northwood's higher streets, sandbags and erosion control deserve early attention. Know where your city or fire authority directs residents for sandbag information during storm events, keep flashlights and batteries accessible, and review how you would respond if a hillside, trail or road near you is closed for flooding or debris.

On the road, the first rains are the slickest, as water lifts months of accumulated oil from pavement. Slow down, leave extra following distance, never drive through flooded crossings, and expect canyon routes to demand patience after heavy rain. Preparation is not alarm. It is simply matching a Mediterranean climate on its own terms: long dry spells, then weather that arrives all at once and rewards the households that were ready.
