Irvine's Trail Network: Dozens of Miles of Off-Street Paths and the Jeffrey Open Space Spine (Irvine Village News)

The easiest way to fall for Irvine is to leave the arterial roads and get onto its trails. The city maintains dozens of miles of off-street paths, linking villages, parks, schools and open space in a network that serves morning runners, dog walkers, commuting cyclists and families teaching a child to ride a bike away from traffic.

The spine of the system in the city's eastern half is the Jeffrey Open Space Trail, which follows its namesake corridor through landscaped open space, connecting neighborhoods toward the foothills and linking with other paths along the way. Elsewhere, trails trace flood-control channels, greenbelts and village edges, including routes around Woodbridge Lake and paths that reach toward the San Joaquin Marsh and the mountains-to-sea corridor beyond the city.

The network's virtue is continuity. A recreational ride can stretch for miles with few street crossings, and practical trips gain options too: a student reaching a school, a worker riding to a business park, a resident walking to a village center by greenbelt rather than sidewalk. Trail etiquette keeps it working for everyone. Keep right, pass with a call or a bell, keep dogs leashed where required, and slow down where paths narrow or cross.

November may be the best trail month of the year in Irvine. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are mild, and the low sun turns ordinary greenbelts golden. Pick a segment you have never walked, even in your own village, and follow it one connection further than usual. The trail network was one of the master plan's best ideas, and it still delivers on its promise: a second map of Irvine, quieter and greener than the one drawn in roads.
